FLAT ROOF EXTENSION

Revit Project (Summer 2015)

This cool personal project came about in the summer of 2015 after I had completed my second year at University. One of my Father’s friends, Robert Adamson, was planning to build an extension to his flat which is placed in London. When Robert heard that I was studying structural engineering with Architectural design, he asked me I would like to produce a 3D representation of what a potential extension would look like for his flat. I have a keen interest in software, so I had been playing around with Revit for a little while using online tutorials. I agreed to the proposition and put my skills to the test.
Robert’s flat is a top floor flat. The street that the flat is on has a long row of buildings that are only two floors high. The entrance door to Robert’s flat is on the ground floor. The door opens to a set of stairs which take you up to the first floor where the flat is. The two-floor flats on that street all have high-pitched timber roofs. The pitched roofs are so high that if you removed them you could add another floor, then put in flat roofs without increasing the overall height of the flats by much. This is what Robert wanted to do with his flat. He wanted to add an extra floor to it where he would add an extra bedroom and bathroom.
I went to London where I stayed in Robert’s flat. I was able to measure out the dimensions of all the rooms and space in the flat and then produce a 3D representation of the flat on Revit with the extension. This was a really fun project to work on and I was able to develop some basic skills in using Revit. The first two images show below are a cross-section of what the flat looks like. The lower set of stairs lead to the ground floor where the door to the flat is. The second set of stairs were my addition. These stairs lead to the added-on floor. The third and fourth image show the added-on floor with a bedroom and bathroom space.

Robert also wanted me to produce a 3D representation of the pitched roof with all its members. Only a fraction of the pitched roof was going to be changed to a flat roof to create the bedroom and bathroom space. Robert wanted to know how many joists and truss members would need to be removed for the extension and their location in the roof. I was able to produce a 3D representation of the roof for him.
